Simran Talwar

Program Lead - Resource Stewardship, The University of Technology Sydney (UTS)

Simran is Research Director and Circular Economy Theme Lead for the Resource Stewardship group at the UTS Institute for Sustainable Futures. She has delivered many successful circular economy and product stewardship research projects at ISF, providing leadership and sectoral expertise in plastics, chemicals, mining and packaging.

Simran has over 15 years of research and industry experience in circular economy, policy, and business strategy. Simran’s research areas are cross-disciplinary, spanning circular economy, industrial ecosystems and networks, competitive dynamics, and technological, structural, and institutional transformation for sustainability.

Simran's doctoral thesis was an empirical investigation into the circular economy, with a focus on closed-loop materials, energy and water exchange networks and industrial symbiosis ecosystems. During the PhD, she undertook applied research across chemical, pharmaceutical, construction, cement, steel, and bio-products industries.

At ISF, Simran leads and manages various research projects into plastics and food packaging, mining and metals and the chemical industry's sustainability practices. She is Principal Advisor to the Australian Product Stewardship Centre of Excellence and serves on the board of the International Society for Industrial Ecology (ISIE) and as strategic partner to Circular Australia.

Simran is part of the research leadership for the Solving Plastic Waste CRC which secured $40 million funding from the Commonwealth over a 10-year period from 2024-2034. She co-leads Program 3 on 'Implementing the circular economy' through research and industry collaboration across policy, business models. markets, data and technology.
